History and Ownership

The Windover Hill log home was originally built in Maysville, West Virginia in 1790. According to entries in a family bible, it remained in the same family for over two hundred years. In the early 1990's, the family asked the local fire department to burn it to the ground as it was in disrepair and they wanted to use the land for other purposes. The fire department refused as they said it would "burn forever" because the logs were so old (nearly petrified).

Thomas (Tom) Thorpe of Latchstring (Catlett, Virginia) found the structure and rescued it from certain demise. In 1994, Joseph Yusba and Anne Robinson purchased the Windover Hill property in Round Hill, Virginia, bought the structure and had Tom dismantle it piece by piece, each log, plank and stone clearly identified, moved it to its Virginia location and rebuilt it on a modern foundation with modern infrastructure.

Extra ceiling height is attained by the addition of logs to the structure. The light fixtures in the home are reproductions made in Connecticut. The windows and doors were custom made by Middleburg Mill Works. The wood for the porch was gathered by Mrs. Yusba from old barns around Western Loudoun County. The result: rustic, log cabin living with modern conveniences in a park like setting.

In 1999, Ramona Lampell purchased the property and had the detached garage built with a studio/apartment above complete with full bath, laundry and separate heating and air conditioning. Ramona was an avid art collector and her art adorned the cabin during her tenure (a piece of it remains over the garage door).

Tim Dunham meticulously cares for the property since his purchase in 2001. This is a unique property and needs the right caretaker to be sure it continues its long life. It can be the perfect retreat, an artist studio, a great environment to write your next book or simply the historic property to be enjoyed.

One of the mysteries that remain today is a unique marking on an inside log behind a kitchen cabinet. It was the only distinctive marking found on any of the logs. Mr. Yusba created a cutout behind the cabinet so it can be seen. He believes it might be some type of Pennsylvania Dutch marking. It's still a mystery!
